ABOUT JUMPSTARTER
IDEAPOP!

JUMPSTARTER IdeaPOP! is a pitching competition for all university students in Hong Kong. We aim to nurture the next generation with an entrepreneurial mindset. Participants will undergo pitch training to learn the best practices for jump-starting a business plan, network with industry leaders, and interact with other young entrepreneurs. It is a startup experience programme organized by Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund, together with Hong Kong Federation of Business Students (HKFBS) and Social Ventures Hong Kong (SVhk).

The top 4 teams will get the chance to pitch their ideas to investor and business leaders at JUMPSTARTER 2020 Grand Finale in February 2020.
PROGRAM BENEFITS
If you are selected as one of the top 15 teams, you will be entitled to join a series of startup workshops in January 2020. The Startup Workshop is designed to help young founders acquire startup knowledge and fundamental frameworks in entrepreneurship, pitching, fundraising, social impact and sustainability. We use a learning-by-doing approach to build skills to drive innovation within your startups, while advancing your personal and professional growth.

WHO CAN APPLY?

JUMPSTARTER IdeaPOP! is open to all university students in Hong Kong. If you fulfil the following requirements, you are eligible to apply:

  • Student from 11 universities across Hong Kong
  • Ranging from tertiary to PhD students (Fresh Graduates are also welcome)
  • Interested in entrepreneurship, technology or innovation
  • No more four students in a team
What is the judging criteria?

Innovation and Disruption to Industry (20%)

  • Advancement of innovation in product / services/ application/ adoption etc.
  • Potential to disrupt the relevant industry
  • Value proposition

Market Potential, Business Model and Defensibility (20%)

  • How will the idea generate revenue
  • Competitive, barriers in entry, first mover advantage etc.
  • Unit economics and scalability

Team Background and Relevant Strength (20%)

  • Capabilities and expertise to execute the business plan
  • Passion, ambition, vision and culture

Traction and Further Development Plan (20%)

  • Operation and financial metrics, milestones and achievements since inception
  • Forecast and product roadmap

Hong Kong Nexus & Social impact (20%)

  • Contribution to general wellbeing of wider society
  • How will you utilise Hong Kong to expand the business
  • Evidence of existing or future operation plans in Hong Kong
Who is on the panel of judges?

Student startups will be selected and ranked by a panel of judges, including industry experts, investors and startup experts, who represent local and global startup communities. Based on the scorecard, we will rank the Top 15 student startups.

What is the selection process?

Online Application & Scoring by Judging Panel

  • Submit the online application online with a powerpoint deck up to 10 slides in PDF format.
  • The selection of the top 15 student startups is based on your submission material, which will be assessed by our judging panel. Please ensure that you have completely filled out the information according to our requirements.
  • Only the top 15 teams will qualify to participate in Startup Workshops and Semi Pitch Day
  • Only the top 4 teams will qualify to participate in Final Pitch

Semi Pitch Day

  • Pick your language
    • Present your ideas on stage in English, Cantonese or Mandarin
    • Present your pitch deck in English
  • Pitch Timer
    • Our pitch timer will begin once you start your pitch on stage.
  • 12 minutes of pitch time is given to each team:
    • 5 minutes for the actual pitch
    • 7 minutes for judges Q&A session

Final Pitch on Feb 11-12

  • The top 4 teams will appear on the keynote stage to compete for the winning spot
  • 8 minutes of pitch time is given to each team:
    • 5 minutes for the actual pitch
    • 3 minutes for judges Q&A session
